Traditional Aleppo soap

Traditional Aleppo soap, also known as Ghar soap, is considered one of the oldest solid soaps in the world. Drawing on a tradition dating back more than 3,000 years, it originated in the city of Aleppo, in northern Syria, the historic birthplace of this ancient craft.

In 2024, the craft of Aleppo Ghar soap was inscribed on UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. This international recognition underscores the exceptional value of this unique tradition, passed down from generation to generation.

This natural soap is distinguished by its simple, plant-based, and authentic composition, relying primarily on two premium oils: olive oil, with its nourishing properties, and laurel berry oil, known for its purifying benefits.

Method for manufacturing Aleppo soap

A true predecessor of Marseille soap, Aleppo soap is now appreciated worldwide for its dermatological benefits, gentleness, and natural qualities. It is suitable for the whole family and can be used both for daily cleansing and for caring for sensitive skin.

Thanks to its artisanal production and the quality of the oils used, Aleppo soap is an exceptional natural cosmetic, respectful of both the skin and the environment.

An artisanal production following the Aleppo tradition

The production of Aleppo soap is based on an ancestral hot saponification process, passed down from generation to generation by Syrian master soap makers.

It all begins with the slow cooking of olive oil in large cauldrons. This oil forms the base of the soap and provides its nourishing, hydrating, and protective properties. Once saponification has progressed, laurel berry oil is added to the mixture. This precious oil gives Aleppo soap its purifying, soothing, and antibacterial qualities.

After several hours of cooking and mixing, the soap paste is then poured onto the floor into large molds. The soap makers smooth the surface before proceeding with the manual cutting of the soap bars. Each soap is traditionally stamped with the soapery seal, guaranteeing its authenticity.

The soap bars are then stored in natural drying rooms, protected from light and humidity. They mature there for at least 9 months, sometimes up to a year. During this drying period, the soap loses much of its water content, becomes harder, and develops its characteristic color: brown on the outside and green on the inside.

This maturation time is essential: it ensures a soap that is gentle, long-lasting, and perfectly balanced for the skin.

The benefits of Aleppo soap for the skin

The benefits of Aleppo soap have been recognized for centuries. Thanks to its natural composition and the absence of chemical additives, it is a gentle and versatile product for daily hygiene.

Olive oil: hydration and protection

Rich in essential fatty acids and antioxidants, olive oil deeply nourishes the skin. It helps maintain the skin’s natural moisture and keeps it supple. It is particularly suitable for dry and sensitive skin.

Laurel oil is known for its purifying, antiseptic, and soothing properties. It helps regulate excess sebum and helps cleanse the skin. This is why Aleppo soap is often recommended for blemish-prone skin, oily skin, or skin prone to irritation.

Thanks to the synergy of these two plant oils, Aleppo soap can be used:

Its simple, natural formula makes it a soap that is particularly gentle on the skin, even for the most sensitive skin types.
