Aleppo soap is winning over more and more people, and that is a good thing. The downside is that some manufacturers take advantage of this enthusiasm to sell products that are Aleppo in name only. Here is how to tell the difference.
The ingredients that should alert you
A real Aleppo soap is plant-based and very simple: olive oil, laurel berry oil, water and soda. So be wary of compositions that contain:
- animal fat, which can clog pores and encourage blemishes;
- palm or coconut oil instead of olive oil, often to cut costs;
- synthetic preservatives and fragrances (laureth sulfate, lauryl sulfate, parabens, EDTA, etc.).
The longer and more complicated the ingredient list, the more doubt is justified.
The right reflexes before buying
A soap that is too rich in water and poor in olive oil is a sign of low-cost manufacturing. What really matters is the proportion of olive oil and laurel oil. Also look at the colour (golden outside, green at the heart), the natural smell, and the presence of a soap maker’s seal.
Without accusing anyone, keep in mind that a label is not enough: it is the composition and the real origin that count.
Our commitment
At Maison du Laurier, we offer soaps whose laurel oil content ranges from 5% to 55% depending on needs, and we display it clearly. Our master soap maker is himself our partner at Organic Bio Tech, which ensures complete traceability.
Why so many imitations on the market?
Success invites copying. As Aleppo soap grows in popularity, some manufacturers seek to ride the trend by cutting costs. Replacing part of the olive oil with palm oil, adding water to inflate the volume, adding fragrance to mask average quality: these shortcuts move the product away from the original recipe.
The problem is that the packaging often keeps displaying “Aleppo soap” and playing on the traditional image. Hence the importance of not relying on the label alone. An abnormally low price, a uniform and artificial green colour, a long ingredient list: these are all signals to examine.
Conversely, a real Aleppo soap embraces its simplicity and traceability. With us, you know where the soap comes from, who makes it and with what proportion of laurel oil. It is precisely this transparency that protects you.
The right reflex in store
Before putting a soap in your basket, take ten seconds: turn the pack over, read the composition, look at the colour of the cut if it is visible, and look for the soap maker’s seal. A real Aleppo soap has nothing to hide; its simplicity is its best proof. If in doubt, find out about the manufacturer and the real origin of the soap: a serious seller answers these questions clearly.

Frequently asked questions
How do I know if an Aleppo soap is real?
A short composition (olive, laurel, water, soda), a green heart under a golden crust, a natural smell and the soap maker’s seal.
Does Aleppo soap contain palm oil?
A real one does not. Palm oil is sometimes used in imitations to cut costs.
